Vitamin B1 is a water soluble vitamin that is readily absorbed into the body and is rapidly secreted. Must be replenished frequently as it is poorly stored in body tissue. Test show that individuals receiving 100 mg of Vitamin B1 a day, discharged 97mg. Requirements increase during illness, stress and after surgery.
Effectiveness is limited by food additives (nitrates and sulphates), baking soda and alcohol. Heat, light and water also have a tendency to reduce and destroy Vitamin B1 content.
FUNCTION:
Vitamin B1 is part of an enzyme that helps change glucose into energy. During the breakdown of sugar to produce energy, pyruvic and lactic acids are formed. With the aid of Vitamin B1, enzymes break pyruvic acid into carbon dioxide and water. Lactic acid is rebuilt into glycogen.
When B1 deficiency occurs, these changes stop and the acid remain in the tissue as an irritant. As a result, energy production loses its efficiency and the body is forced to depend on half burned sugars and fats. Body fatigue and general laziness occur.

Benefits of Vitamin B1
Thiamin plays a part in the chain of reactions that provides energy for the body. It is thought to be beneficial for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and older adults with mental impairment. It may also improve the mental function of epilepsy sufferers who take the drug phenytoin.
