The study aimed to evaluate the role of weight loss on the values of blood pressure in overweight people with stage 1 hypertension, and who never received medication to treat their hypertension problems.
The study involved 189 overweight people (body mass index or BMI between 25 to 29.9) with stage 1 hypertension also (systolic blood pressure between 140 and 159 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure between 90 and 99 mmHg) . Participants received advice of diet and / or 120 to 360 mg of Orlistat (slimming drug) per day to lose 5% of their body weight in 6 months.
Others who managed to lose 5% of body weight continued treatment for another 6 months and their blood pressure and body weight were measured every month. At the base of 6 and 12 months of treatment, the change in blood pressure was evaluated every 24 hours and blood samples were collected for various blood tests.
111 participants (59% of study subjects) were able to lose 5% of their body weight. People who have lost these kg also decreased hypertension. More people lose weight, the more they reduced their hypertension.
Among those who lost 5% of their weight, 48% had normalized their BMI, 53% had normalized their blood pressure. The test results are not conclusive.
